A Journey Through Time

01 - MILLIONS OF YEARS IN THE MAKING

To tell the story of how The Grizzly Paw came to be: we must first start at the beginning of mankind. It is believed that one of the earliest defining human traits, the opposable thumb (A.K.A the ability to hold a pint glass), evolved over 2 million years ago. Absolutely crucial.

02 - DIVINE HOPPINESS

Fast forward to the Middle Ages, with beer now mostly produced in monasteries all across Europe, it became the drink of choice for monks in times of fasting. (They were allowed to drink up to 4 liters per day!) These monks are the real heroes of this story as they approached brewing the same way they approached their studies – with patience, diligence, and a bald dome that crushed pints ‘till the cows came home. They were the first to introduce HOPS into the ale recipe and in turn changed the course of human history as we know it.

03 - nineteen-ninety-six

Canmore, Alberta: the birthplace of a piece of Canadian brewing history, maybe even the world. Niall Fraser forges what we know today as: The Grizzly Paw Pub & Brewing Company. Starting as a fun-sized Brew Pub on Main St., The Grizzly Paw quickly became a landmark destination for tourists and locals alike - solidifying its place in the game as one of Alberta’s pioneering breweries in the Canadian craft beer movement.

04 - Movin' on up

After the needs of our thirsty patrons outweighed the capacity of our humble brewhouse, ground broke on a state-of-the-art facility in 2011, and its floodgates opened to the world 2 years later. 3 stories high, 3x the brewing power, and 100x as awesome while still maintaining a direct line to the rocky mountain fresh water supply of which our elixirs are concocted. This facility paved the way for province-wide distribution, and now hosts the TAPROOM, TANK310, and GrizzlyBBQ, each with a distinctive customer experience.

05 - MILLIONS OF MILESTONES LATER

Over 1 million pints packaged and countless awards later, The Grizzly Paw continues its quest towards maintaining all-out excellence in beverage quality, hospitality experience, and the employee adventure – all with an emphasis on environmental stewardship.

So whenever we raise a glass of fine beer up to our lips, we raise it a little higher for the folks like YOU for continuing to support the brand over the years! Cheers.

Our Environmental Initiatives

01 — Building with our Marble in Mind 🌎

Our commitment to the environment is evident in our brewery design. We prioritize using environmentally friendly materials, & sustainably-sourced lumber. Our facility is also fitted with some pretty neat heating practices. Rather than hinging on a heater that would take loads of energy to warm up this massive building during our long winters - we recycle the heat produced from our brewing boiler, and circulate it throughout.
Our Environmental Initiatives

02 — No Waste Wasted 🥕

With a newly installed water meter, we’re gaining insights on how to get the most of our Rocky Mountain H2O. We’ve also partnered with local environmental services, Flying Pigs, to divert nearly 94% of our brewery & restaurant waste on a yearly basis. This includes composting 100% of our spent grain, & using compostable materials whenever possible while opting into the Town of Canmore Organic Waste program.
Our Environmental Initiatives

03 — Green Power Plays 🌿

Our sustainability journey extends beyond our walls - and ceiling! Since our new facility was built in 2012, we’ve been partnered with Bullfrog Power to mitigate our environmental impact by investing a portion of our energy usage back into the green power grid. Helping fund awe-inspiring projects across the country, like the Yellow Lake Solar Farm. To harness the sun rays that kiss our building every day, we installed over 150 solar panels of our own in 2021 - attributing to 14% of our annual electricity consumption.
A Few Faces Behind the Craft

Say hi to the squad

Just a small sample of the bright, beer-loving, mountain-chasing individuals that weave their piece into the fabric of our brand every day. If only we had enough space to show you EVERYONE because we can think of about 100 others who deserve their mugshot up here too.
